5 to 15 pages is ideal. Lead with the pages you would want an AI answer to quote.
Upload it to your site root so it lives at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a plain markdown file at the root of your website that gives AI systems a curated map of your most important pages. Instead of leaving ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity to infer your site's structure from navigation menus, you state it directly: what the site is, and which pages matter most.
It is an emerging convention rather than a ratified standard. No engine currently promises to honour it, but it costs nothing, takes a minute, and makes your best pages explicit to any system that does read it.
Where do I put the file?
Upload it to your web root so it is reachable at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, exactly like robots.txt. On WordPress, most file-manager or SFTP tools can place it next to your wp-config.php. Verify by opening the URL in a browser.
Does llms.txt help AI visibility?
On its own, modestly. It cannot rescue a site whose crawlers are blocked: a perfect llms.txt on a site that blocks OAI-SearchBot changes nothing at all, because the crawler never gets in to read it. Fix crawler access first, then add llms.txt as the cheap finishing touch.
An llms.txt is step three. Step one is whether ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity can reach your pages at all. Our free checker tests all 15 AI crawlers, including the firewall blocks robots.txt never shows, in about a minute.
